The establishment of the Stassen
Group of Companies was the ambitious efforts of a tiny island-nation,
Sri Lanka, to enter the global arena of trade and commerce.
By concentrating on developing and growing the nation's plantation
industry, Stassen steadily built up a sound reputation in exporting
quality agricultural produce. The spirit of entrepreneurship
and pioneering courage displayed by the group has served as
a shining beacon of promise for many others to follow.
Today, Stassen controls 17,000 hectares of the best high, medium
and low-grown teas exported from Sri Lanka. The estates are
set in the scenic splendour of the Central, Uva and Sabaragamuwa
provinces of Sri Lanka, at elevations to suit varied and discerning
tastes.
Since its humble beginnings as a diminutive trading house in
1977, Stassen has grown to lead the corporate world in Sri Lanka
and has made its presence felt internationally as well. Stassen
has emerged as one of the largest exporters of tea and desiccated
coconut, with annual shipments of tea ranging between 24-28
million kilograms.
While tea remains at the core of its diverse business interests,
Stassen has been successful in building up an interesting mix
of businesses, which reflect the group's able management capabilities.
